Scholarship Benefits

 

For overseas students, the MEXT University Recommendation offers a fully-funded scholarship that pays for the bulk of their costs.

  • Monthly allowance for a Master’s student is 144,000 Yen. A PhD student’s monthly living expenses come to 145,000 Yen.
  • Students who study or perform research in specific designated regions of Japan may be eligible for an additional monthly stipend of 2,000 or 3,000 Yen.
  • Tuition: There will be no enrollment or tuition costs.
  • Cost of Travel: There will be round-trip airfare from/to Japan.

Eligibility Criteria

 

There are fundamental requirements to be eligible for the University of Tokyo Scholarship in Japan.

Students from every nation that is diplomatically connected to Japan.
The candidate’s birthdate must be April 2, 1985, or later.
You have to apply for a related field of study or the one you studied at your former university.
No Requirement for a Language Exam

Language Criteria

 

English

A Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) score of B2 or above (e.g., TOEFL iBT 72 or above, IELTS 5.5 or above).
fulfilled the entrance requirements for the Master’s or Doctoral programs at the Graduate School of Science, University of Tokyo, by completing an educational program with English as the primary language of instruction.

Japanese

Obtained a N2 or higher on the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT).
Has fulfilled the prerequisites for admission to the Master’s or Doctoral programs at the Graduate School of Science, University of Tokyo, by completing an educational program using Japanese as the major language of instruction.

Required Documents:
  • Official transcripts of academic standing from graduate and undergraduate programs (originals or certified copies).
  • Undergraduate and graduate school certificates of graduation or provisional certificates (originals or certified copies).
  • An outline of your thesis research in progress or, if your thesis has been finished, an abstract.
  • Evidence of excellent performance or a successful track record.
  • Suggestion Letter-Photo.
  • A language proficiency certificate.
  • CV (any format is acceptable, but it must contain your entire academic and professional background.).

 Honors Scholarship

 

International students who are currently enrolled in private universities in Japan are eligible to apply for the Japan Student Services Organization’s (JASSO) Honors Scholarship, which is intended to support their academic work and research expenses while in Japan. Graduate student recipients received 65,000 Japanese Yen per month as of April 2010. After admission, applications must be submitted through Kyoto University.

Osaka University Scholarship

 

This scholarship is for students with outstanding grades. A monthly stipend of 80,000 JPY is provided to those who received an OU scholarship.

 

Financial aid offered by private organizations 

 

Japanese and foreign students can apply for financial aid provided by private organizations.

Students are informed about available financial help; however, please be aware that not all applicants will ultimately be awarded scholarships due to competitive screening.

Additional financial aid

 

Applications for a tuition fee exemption (for either half or all tuition costs) are open to all students at Osaka University.
